What happens to the body when your vitamin D levels are low?

While primarily known for bone health and immunity, vitamin D also plays a significant role in muscle growth and strength. Experts like Dr. Vishal Shinde and Dr. Anup Khatri explain that vitamin D acts like a hormone with receptors in muscle tissue, crucial for muscle contraction, protein synthesis, and overall function. Adequate vitamin D levels are associated with better muscle strength, performance, and recovery. Supplementing vitamin D in deficient individuals, especially older adults or those with limited sun exposure, can improve muscle mass and strength over time, as deficiency can lead to muscle weakness and fatigue, hindering fitness progress. Dr. Khatri adds that vitamin D aids calcium absorption, essential for strong bones and muscles, and supports proper muscle contraction, potentially improving energy levels and exercise performance. However, high doses won't magically build muscle; it optimizes muscle function when combined with training and nutrition. Muscle gain is multifactorial, requiring a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient rest. Maintaining a healthy vitamin D balance is key, as too much can be harmful. It's advisable to get vitamin D levels checked and consult a doctor before taking supplements. Natural sources include sunlight, fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods. Think of vitamin D as a foundational nutrient supporting, not replacing, a comprehensive fitness approach.
